LAKE ELSINORE – The Loyola Marymount University softball team left Lake Elsinore with a win on Sunday afternoon, as the team made a fourth-inning comeback to beat University of Hawaii 6-5 at the Golden State Plus 27 Tournament.
The Lions were slow to start on Sunday, as both teams went scoreless until the Rainbow Warriors scored four runs in the top of the third. LMU was quick to respond in the bottom of the fourth, as Morgan Debord was first on base from a walk, and then advanced to second after
Megan Dedrick singled to left field. With the two on base,
Desiree Moreno hit a homerun to collect three RBIs. Down 4-3,
Andrea Gonzalez tied things up for the Lions, as she hit a homerun.
Hawaii took the lead back after scoring another run in the top of the fifth, but LMU tied things back up after
Paris Nguyen scored after being walked and then a sacrifice fly from Moreno.
Tied up at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Gonzalez was walked to open up the inning, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on an error.
Makayla Romeo hit a single to left field to send Gonzalez home.
Hawaii wasn't able to score any runs in the seventh, giving the Lions the win. Debord, Romeo and Moreno all went 1-2 at the plate, while Moreno collected four RBIs. The Lions had six RBIs, compared to Hawaii's four.
Brittany Steenbergen picked up her third win of the season, as she pitched 6.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs and having two strikeouts.
Linnay Wilson earned her third save of the season, as she pitched one inning and had zero hits and runs and had two strikeouts.
Up next: The Lions will head down to San Diego to take on San Diego State University.
