SANTA CLARA, Calif. – It was a 9-0 run in the second half that erased a four-point deficit and secured the road conference win for LMU men's basketball. The Lions (9-17, 3-9 WCC) overcame 15 lead changes to beat Santa Clara (18-9, 5-7 WCC), 65-59.
The Lions trailed by seven points on three separate occasions in the first half. It was a 9-0 run that ultimately gave LMU their first lead of the game with 5:43 on the clock.
Seikou Sisoho Jawara and
Erik Johansson opened the run with back-to-back baskets.
Eli Scott then buried a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game. LMU took the lead on a
Parker Dortch triple, 21-19.
The Broncos ended the run with a three-pointer of their own to retake the lead, before the Lions scored the next six unanswered points. The entirety of the 15-3 run lasted for over six minutes late in the half and pushed the Lions ahead by as many as five points, 27-22. Santa Clara closed the half with five of the final six points, but LMU took a 28-27 lead into the locker room.
The two teams traded scores to open the second half as the lead changed 11-straight times.
After Santa Clara built up a four-point lead, LMU responded with the next nine to take a 49-44 lead into the final five minutes. The 13-2 extended run helped the Lions snap a five-game losing streak and pick up a conference win for the third time this season.
Scott scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, and
Jordan Bell scored 12 of his 13 points after intermission. Scott added a game-high five assists and
Sisoho Jawara was the first half leader with all 10 of his points coming before halftime.
LMU committed only four turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, and ended the game only 10. The Lions tied a season-best mark by knocking down 80 percent (12-for-15) of their free throws.
The road trip continues for LMU with two away games next week. The Lions play at Saint Mary's on Thursday before heading to the Rose City for a game against Portland on Saturday night.
