LOS ANGELES – The home edition of the PCH Cup had big leads, major runs, and key moments as LMU men's basketball played in their first overtime game of the season. The Lions (8-15, 2-7 WCC) lost to Pepperdine (12-11, 5-4 WCC), 68-67, on Saturday afternoon.
LMU was buoyed by
Eli Scott's 21 points, six assists, and five rebound performance and
Keli Leaupepe's 17 and nine night on 7-for-9 shooting.
Leaupepe kicked off the scoring, putting the Lions ahead on a running layup on LMU's opening possession.
Scott helped the Lions double-up the Waves early on, with a basket at the 14:21 mark to make it a 12-6 game.
Leaupepe then scored eight points as part of an 11-0 run that extended the LMU lead to 23-10 at the 8:17 mark of the first.
A 5-0 run, sparked by jumpers from
Jordan Bell and
Ivan Alipiev, heading into the final five and a half minutes of the first half gave LMU their largest lead of the game, 28-12.
Pepperdine closed out the half with 16 of the final 21 points to cut their deficit to 33-26 at intermission.
Erik Johansson hit the only LMU field goal during that stretch, a three that snapped a 9-0 run.
The Waves scored eight consecutive points early in the second half to tie the game at 37-all with 13:42 to play in regulation, and took their first lead two minutes later, 42-40.
After Bell and
Lazar Zivanovic regained the lead on two separate occasions, Pepperdine scored eight straight to lead 52-46 with 6:14 on the clock.
With the Waves ahead by eight points, the Lions put together a gutty run to score the final eight points of regulation and force overtime. Scott accounted for the first four, then
Jonathan Dos Anjos came in off the bench for the final four points of the game including two critical free throws with 21 seconds remaining. The LMU defense earned a stop on Pepperdine's final possession and the Lions headed to overtime for the first time this season.
The Waves put LMU in an early hole in the extra session, scoring the first six points. Dos Anjos put the Lions on the board with a trip to the line.
With Pepperdine splitting free throws on the opposite end Scott made a layup to make it a one-possession game with 1:10 remaining.
On the ensuing defensive possession, Dos Anjos jumped a passing lane and went coast-to-coast for a dunk. LMU got the stop they needed and called timeout with 11.2 on the clock. Scott put up a three for the win as time expired, but could not knock it down to complete the comeback.
Alipiev finished with 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting, and Dos Anjos scored eight points on a perfect two shots and four free throws. Despite not scoring,
Parker Dortch grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists.
LMU shot 61.9 percent (13-for-21) in the first half, and finished the game at a 52.1 percent (25-for-48) mark. The Lions committed 21 turnovers, however, and only forced 10 from the Waves.
Only one game is scheduled for the Lions next week, a trip to Spokane to face the #2 Gonzaga Bulldogs on Thursday night.
