HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Lions (1-1) put together a strong fourth quarter, but was unable to erase the early deficit in Sunday's exhibition loss against Fresno State (1-1). LMU entered the fourth quarter trailing, 8-3, but despite three unanswered goals, lost the game, 8-6.
Alexandra Akritidou opened the scoring with her goal less than a minute into the action. After the Bulldogs evened,
Megan Plank gave the lead back to the Lions. Fresno State evened the score before the end of the period, making it a 2-2 game heading into the second quarter.
Fresno State scored all five goals of the second quarter, building up a 7-2 lead at intermission.
Alena Sanchez's penalty goal at the 2:48 mark of the third quarter was the first score of the second half, but the Bulldogs got it right back 20 seconds later.
The final quarter was all LMU, as
Abbey Grosse scored within 30 seconds of the fourth quarter beginning. Grosse added her second at the 3:39 mark to make it a three-goal game, and Sanchez added another with 2:49 to play to bring it within two, 8-6. Neither team scored for the remainder of the game, bringing the exhibition game to a close.
These two teams will face off for real in Fresno on Apr. 10, for a conference game.
LMU will next compete in the Lancer Joust for two games on Jan. 25.
