LOS ANGELES –
Eli Scott went 9-for-13 from the field for a game-high 20 points, but #1-ranked Gonzaga (18-1, 4-0 WCC) topped LMU men's basketball (7-10, 1-2), 87-62.
Gonzaga started the game with the first six points but LMU answered with baskets by
Erik Johansson and
Keli Leaupepe to make it a 6-4 game five and a half minutes into the game.
The Zags inflated their lead to 11, but a 6-0 run by the Lions cut it back to a five-point game.
Eli Scott, Johansson, and
Jordan Bell each got to the rim for consecutive layups. Despite the run, the Lions found themselves down 16 at intermission, 38-22.
Deovaunta Williams opened the second half with a layup but the Bulldogs answered with the next two baskets.
Both Scott and
Ivan Alipiev scored in double figures in the second half. Scott scored 13 of his points on 6-of-7 shooting in the second half, and Alipiev hit a trio of threes as part of his 11 second half points.
LMU scored 40 second half points to finish the game, compared to 22 in the opening 20 minutes. Both teams improved their field goal percentage after the break, but the Lions shot 38.6 percent (22-for-57), whereas Gonzaga hit 52.5 percent (31-for-59) of their shots.
The Lions are on the road for the next two games, playing in the PCH Cup on Thursday and then travel to San Francisco for a day game against the Dons on Jan. 18.
