LOS ANGELES – Penn State's offense showed why the Big 10 team ranks in the country's top 10. The Nittany Lions (3-1-0) shutout LMU (0-3-1) on Sunday afternoon in the opening game of the WCC/Big 10 Challenge.
Loyola Marymount University fended off 13 first half corner kicks by #7 Penn State, to keep the game within reach. The visitors did get one first half shot to go in, a 25
thminute finish, to set the score at 1-0 through the remainder of the opening 45 minutes.
The strength of Penn State showed as soon as the two teams returned from halftime, with the Nittany Lions scoring quickly to open the second period.
PSU add one more in the 71
stminute to solidify their 3-0 win. Following the goal, freshman
Sadie Kenny subbed in for her experience of college soccer, playing the final 19+ minutes.
LMU's best offensive opportunity came in the 31
stminute of the opening half. Simone Handed used a burst of speed to get a look at goal and fire a shot upper right, before Penn State's goalkeeper made the save.
The Lions will close out the three-game home stretch on Friday afternoon with the first game of an LMU women's and men's double header. The women's team hosts Duquesne at 4 p.m. then the men's team will follow and play Oral Roberts at 7 p.m.
