WCC Preseason Poll
LOS ANGELES – The 2019 women's soccer season is officially underway. LMU has been picked by the West Coast Conference's head coaches to finish eighth in the league, the conference announced Monday. The Lions will have their first chance to compete this Friday and Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Hitting the road for the first time is always a mixture of emotions," said Head Coach
Michelle Myers. "Training camp is a long two weeks of soccer, soccer, soccer that wears on both the players and staff physically and mentally. So the thought of traveling across the country to play a few games seems counterproductive but sometimes getting away can help refocus and reenergize the team. It is also nice to do it now before school starts so we have some extra time to get out there and get adjusted to the time change, the weather, etc. We will be facing two new, unfamiliar opponents which can also be exciting."
The season opens officially on Friday, Aug. 23 with a road contest at the University of Pittsburgh's Ambrose Urbanic Field at Petersen Sports Complex. The Lions and Panthers will battle it out at 7 p.m. local time (4 p.m. PST). The game will be streamed live online and feature live stats. Pitt finished 2018 with a 4-12-1 record after going winless in the ACC.
LMU will then take the less than 2.5 mile drive two days later to face Duquesne University on Sunday morning at noon (9 a.m. PST). The Dukes, who finished 2018 with a 6-9-2 record, open their season two days prior with a tough battle against 11
th-ranked West Virginia in Morgantown before returning to Rooney Field for their home opener against the Lions. The game will be available to watch on ESPN+ with live stats also available.
Our goals for this weekend will be to continue to identify and develop the strengths and weaknesses of this year's team, compete to win, stay healthy, and be present," added Myers.
The WCC also announced this week the predicted standings of the conference's 10 women's soccer programs. BYU and Santa Clara split the five top votes to enter the season as co-favorites. Following a 3-13-4 season in 2018, the Lions were tabbed to finish eighth above a Saint Mary's team that LMU tied and a Pacific team that LMU shutout 4-0 a year ago.
