The Loyola Marymount Lions (27-20, 14-10 WCC) surrendered a pair of home runs and couldn't come up with enough offense to come back and dropped the season series against BYU with a 10-3 decision on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Getting the starting nod for the fourth consecutive weekend for head coach
Jason Gill's Lions was sophomore
Matt Voelker. He was sharp early on for LMU, scattering two hits through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the top half of the fourth.
Â
Voelker began the visiting half of the fourth by surrendering two consecutive hits, a single to BYU's Jackson Cluff followed by a triple from Keaton Kringlen which broke the scoreless tie. BYU brought in another four runs when Ryan Sepede hit an RBI single and Carson Matthews hit a three-run home run bringing the total of runs scored to five.
Â
The Lions cut BYU's lead down to two in the home half of the fourth courtesy of senior
Brandon Shearer's second home run in as many days.
Nick Sogard led off the inning with a walk, promptly stole second and was followed by a
Kenny Oyama walk putting two Lions on base. Shearer stepped into the box and sent a 1-0 Justin Sterner offering deep over the right field wall making the score 5-3.
Â
Voelker took the hill in the visiting half of the fifth and got the first out but ran into trouble after surrendering a walk. Voelker gave up his second home run of the day as the Cougars pushed their lead 7-3 prompting Gill to make a call to the pen.
Alexander Burge came in relief of Voelker and got Mitch McIntyre to strike out swinging and Ryan Sepede to ground out to third ending the inning.Â
Â
The Lions put together a scoring threat in the bottom half of the eighth as they loaded the bases with two outs for
Trevin Esquerra. The inning began with a strike out but was followed by a
Cooper Uhl walk. Sogard grounded out to first pushing Uhl to second and Oyama dropped a perfect bunt to third base putting two men on. Shearer drew a walk loading the bases for Esquerra. Esquerra saw a ball and then fouled off a Drew Zimmerman pitch before grounding out to first ending the rally and scoring threat for LMU.
Â

Alex Lambeau in the bottom half ending on the game on a rocket shot by
