Lions Drop Series to BYU

LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- They Loyola Marymount softball team lost its series to BYU, as it fell in its last two games on Saturday afternoon, 4-2 and 5-1, going 2-1 on the series. 
 
The Lions started off their first game on a strong note, as Molly Grumbo hit a single to open up the bottom of the first. Grumbo advanced on a wild pitch, and then advanced to third when Kaley Robinson grounded out. A sacrifice fly from Irma Sanchez sent Grumbo home, putting the first run on the board for the Lions. 
 
BYU answered back in the top of the third, as the Cougars scored two runs to take the lead. The Lions quickly responded, in the bottom of the third, as Grumbo hit her fourth homerun of the season to tie things up.
 
The Lions and the Cougars were tied up until the top of the seventh, when BYU put two more runs on the board to win the game. 
 
Despite the loss LMU had six hits over BYU's five. Grumbo went 2-3 at the plate, while Megan Dedrick, Andrea Gonzalez and Kaley Robinson went 1-3. 
 
Samantha Manti pitched six innings, allowing four hits and three runs, while having eight strikeouts. 
 
Linnay Wilson and Hannah Bandimere (11-9) both came in to pitch in the seventh inning. Wilson allowed one run and Bandimere allowed one hit. 
 
After an intense seventh inning in the first game, the Lions started their second game of the day off strong, but couldn't keep up the pace.
 
For the second time of the day, Grumbo opened up the game with a single. She then advanced after Sanchez hit a single and then advanced to third on a passed ball. A single from Delanie Wisz sent Grumbo home, marking her third run of the day. 
 
The Cougars put three runs on the board in the third inning, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Lions weren't able to bounce back, giving BYU the win and the series. 
 
BYU had eight hits, while the Lions had five. Grumbo went 2-3 at the plate, while Sanchez, Wisz and Dedrick all went 1-3. 
 
Bandimere picked up the loss, as she pitched 3.1 innings and allowed five hits and four runs. Manti pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run. 
 
The Lions will host their second conference game next weekend against San Diego with a double header on Saturday and one game on Sunday.
