Lions Shutout Toreros in Double-Header

 
LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team shutout the University of San Diego in both of its games on Saturday, as the Lions beat the Toreros 2-0 in their first game and 8-0 in the second. 
 
The Lions opened the series against USD on a strong note, as Molly Grumbo, who was first up to bat, hit a single, which was followed by a single from Irma Sanchez
 
With the runners on first and second, Andrea Gonzalez hit a double out to left field, which advanced Grumbo home, putting the Lions on the board at the end of the first. 
 
With a 1-0 lead headed to the bottom of the third with two outs, Gonzalez hit her fourth homerun of the season to give LMU a 2-0 lead and her second RBI of the game. 
 
Neither team score the rest of the game, giving the Lions their first win of the series. 
 
The Lions had eight total hits compared to the Toreros four, while neither team had any errors. Gonzalez and Sanchez went 2-3 at the plate, while Grumbo, Megan Dedrick, Maddison Flores and Desiree Moreno all went 1-3. 
 
Hannah Bandimere pitched a complete game shutout and only allowed four hits and is now 12-9 on the season. 
 
Up 1-0 in the series, the Lions had even more momentum in the second game, starting with an explosive first inning. 
 
Grumbo set the tone right away, as she opened up the second game with a double, which was quickly followed by a single from Flores. 
 
With Sanchez at bat, Flores stole second. With bases loaded after Sanchez was walked, Gonzalez reached first on a fielder's choice, as Grumbo was out at home, Flores and and Sanchez advanced. 
 
A single from Dedrick sent Sanchez and Flores home to put the Lions on the board. The momentum kept going in the bottom of the first, as Delanie Wisz hit a double to send Dedrick and Gonzalez home, giving the Lions a 4-0 lead to end the first inning. 
 
At the bottom of the second, Grumbo was walked, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. Flores was then walked and stole second. With runners on second on third, Dedrick got her third RBI of the game when Grumbo scored. 
 
Up 5-0 at the bottom of the fifth inning, Riley Ehlen hit a single to center field and then advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from Desiree Moreno. Ehlen advanced to third after 
 
Kaley Robinson grounded out.  A single from Grumbo sent Ehlen home, giving the Lions a 6-0 lead. 
 
The Lions weren't done, as they put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, starting with a single from Gonzalez, who was advanced to second after Dedrick was walked. 
 
A single up the middle from Ehlen sent Gonzalez home, and then a single from Moreno sent Dedrick home, ending the fourth inning up 8-0. 
 
The Toreros weren't able to put any runs on the board in the top of the fifth, ending the game on a mercy rule. 
 
The Lions ended the game with 10 hit, doubling the Toreros. Grumbo and Dedrick both went 2-2 at the plate, Moreno went 1-1, Ehlen went 2-3, Flores went 1-2, while Wisz and Gonzalez went 1-3. 
 
Samantha Manti picked up her 11thwin of the season after pitching a five-inning shutout, only allowing five hits. 
 
The Lions will be back in action on Sunday to complete the series against USD at 10:00 a.m. at Smith Field.
