SANTA CLARA, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team (30-17, 6-3 WCC) won its series against Santa Clara, losing its first game 4-3 and winning its second and third games 10-5 and 11-7.
The Lions started their first game off against the Broncos, where both teams went scoreless for the first three innings. The Lions put the first run on the board in the game after
Maddison Flores hit a single to the shortstop, and then advanced on a wild pitch.
A single from
Andrea Gonzalez advanced Flores to third, and then a single to left field by
Megan Dedrick send her home.
Neither team scored in the sixth inning.
Riley Ehlen opened up the top of the seventh with a single, followed by a single from
Desiree Moreno, where
Kaley Robinson came in to pinch run. Both runners advanced after
Sierra Marshall was reached on a fielder's choice, which gave Robinson the out.
With Ehlen on third and Marshall on first, Grumbo hit a single to center field to send Ehlen home. A single from Flores put Marshall on third, and then she advanced home after Sanchez flied out.
Up 3-0 headed into the bottom of the seventh, the Broncos responded, as they put four runs on the board, ending in a walk-off at 4-3.
The Lions had 10 total runs compared to the Broncos' five. Ehlen went 2-3 at the plate, while Moreno went 1-1. Flores went 2-4, while Dedrick and Sanchez went 1-3.
Hannah Bandimere (12-10) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs.
Down 1-0 on the day, the Lions bounced back for an explosive second game, putting 10 runs on the board.
LMU had a dominating first inning starting off with Grumbo, as she hit a single to third base. Flores then made it to first base on an error, followed by
Irma Sanchez reaching first on an error.
With bases loaded, Gonzalez was walked, sending Grumbo home.
Delanie Wisz was then walked, sending Flores home.
Up 2-0 with bases loaded, Ehlen hit a single into right field, sending Sanchez home, while the fourth run of the game was scored when Moreno was hit by the pitch to send Gonzalez home.
With bases loaded, Grumbo hit a double to send
Hailey Jackson, who pinch ran for Moreno, Ehlen and Wisz home, giving the Lions a 7-0 lead to end the top of the first.
The Lions put another run on the board in the top of the second. Dedrick doubled to left field. While on second, Ehlen hit a single, advancing Dedrick to third, and then advancing her home on an error.
The Broncos responded in the bottom of the second, putting one run on the board. Santa Clara put two more runs on the board in the fourth, and then in the sixth, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the Lions.
Up 8-5 in the top of the seventh, the Lions put two more runs on the board. Dedrick opened the inning up with a double to right center, which was followed by a homerun from Wisz, to put two more runs on the board.
The Lions had 10 total hits compared to the Bronco's nine. Grumbo went 3-4 at the plate, while Dedrick and Ehlen went 2-4. Moreno and Gonzalez went 1-3.
Samantha Manti pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and three runs.
Linnay Wilson (5-1) came in for the win, allowing for hits and two runs.
Tied at 1-1 on the series, the Lions had another explosive game, as they beat the Broncos 11-7 to close out the series.
The Lions opened the first inning up with three runs, starting with a double from Flores, and then a single from Sanchez, followed by a walk from Gonzalez.
Flores scored after Dedrick fouled out. Wisz then hit a double to right center, which sent Sanchezand Gonzalez home, giving the Lions a 3-0 lead.
The Broncos quickly responded, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the first.
Santa Clara took the lead after scoring three more runs in the bottom of the third. The Lions answered in the top of the fifth, as Sanchez scored after Wisz flied out, and Gonzalez scored after Ehlen doubled.
The Broncos put one run on the board in the bottom of the fifth. LMU keot the momentum going in the top of the sixth, as
Sierra Marshall scored after a single from Sanchez, and then Flores scored after Dedrick singled up the middle.
Tied up at 7-7, at the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lions were forced to extra innings. It wasn't until the top of the ninth that the Lions finished off the game, as they scored four runs.
Wisz opened up the inning with a double to left field, and then a double from Moreno sent her home. Ehlen hit a single and then scored a run from a single from Marshall.
With two runners on base, Flores hit a double to send both Marshall and Kaley Robnison home.
The Lions had 19 total hits, compared to Santa Clara's 14. Marshall went 4-5 at the plate, while Flores and Ehlen went 3-5.
Bandimere pitched one inning, allowing two hits and three runs, while Manti pitched 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs. Wilson came in to pick up her sixth win of the season, allowing eight hits but only one run.
The Lions will be back home next week to host Saint Mary's on Saturday and Sunday.
