LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team (28-16, 4-2) picked up its last non-conference win of the season on Monday, as the team beat New Mexico State 3-2.
"I liked how we competed today," said head coach
Sami Strinz-Ward. "Both our offense and defense did what they needed to do to get the job done."
The Lions and the Aggies opened up the first inning with one hit a piece, but both teams left the first scoreless.
Tied at 0-0, the Lions had a second inning rally, as they put up three runs.
Delanie Wisz advanced to first after being hit by the pitch. With Wisz on first,
Riley Ehlen hit her fifth homerun on the season, and her second homerun of the week to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
Hailey Jackson came in to pinch run for
Desiree Moreno after she was hit by the pitch. A double to center field from
Molly Grumbo sent Jackson home, advancing the lead to 3-0.
The Aggies were able to get one hit on the board in the top of the third, but it wasn't enough to get a run.
Both teams went quietly in the fourth inning and it wasn't until the top of the fifth when NMSU made some noise after a triple was hit with a runner already on base, giving the Aggies their first run of the game.
After a hitless-scoreless sixth inning from both teams, the Aggies put one more run on the board in the top of the seventh after a homerun. The Lions defense quickly responded, closing out the game with a 3-2 lead.
The Lions had three total hits and two errors, compared to New Mexico State University's five hits and zero errors. Grumbo led the team in batting average, as she went 2-3 at the plate, while Ehlen went 1-2.
West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week,
Samantha Manti, pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, only allowing five hits and two runs, earning her 12
thwin of the season.
The Lions will continue their conference schedule this week, as the team will travel to Santa Clara to take on the Broncos in a three-game series starting with one game on Friday and two on Saturday.
