LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team swept the University of San Diego in its three-game series over the weekend, concluding its third game with a seventh-inning comeback to win the game 4-3 after a walk-off.
"I really liked our team's fight," said head coach
Sami Strinz-Ward. "We are extremely tough when our backs are against the wall. It was really nice to see that rally in the seventh. There was a lot of belief here in the dugout, and we were just working one at a time. It was a total team effort and I love to see them come together like they did."
Up 2-0 in the series, the Lions started their last game off to a slow start, as San Diego hit a homerun in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Toreros continued their momentum in the top of the third, putting two more runs on the board.
Up 3-0, the Lions didn't make any noise until the bottom of the seventh, when
Riley Ehlen hit a homerun to put the Lions on the board.
LMU continued its momentum, as
Desiree Moreno hit a single, where
Hailey Jackson came in to pinch run.
Kaley Robinson hit a double to advance Jackson to third, which was quickly followed by a single from
Molly Grumbo.
With bases loaded,
Maddison Flores reached first base on an error, sending Jackson and Robinson home.
Tied at 3-3,
Irma Sanchez hit a single up the middle to send Grumbo home for the walk-off. The Lions closed out the seventh inning up 4-3 to win the series.
Grumbo and Robinson both had doubles and one run. The Lions had 12 hits compared to San Diego's nine.
Andrea Gonzalez and Ehlen both went 2-3 at the plate, while Grumbo went 2-4. Moreno, Robinson and
Delanie Wisz all went 1-3.
Hannah Bandimere pitched 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs.
Samantha Manti pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run.
Linnay Wilson came in for the win, pitchinf 2.0, hitless, scoreless innings.
The Lions will be back at Smith Field on Monday for a break in their conference schedule to take on New Mexico State at 1:00 p.m.
