LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount men's tennis team (6-12, 4-3 WCC) upset No. 38 BYU at home Friday afternoon, as the Lions won 4-2.
"We came in and we did what we were supposed to do, we competed!" said head coach
Tom Lloyd.
The Lions struggled in doubles play, as
Lukas Moenter and
Thien Nguyen fell to No. 48 Sean Hill and Jeffrey Hsu on court one, 6-2, while
Nick Borchenko and
Ethan Prost fell to Jacob Tullis and Ben Gajardo on court two 6-3, clinching the doubles point for the Cougars.
Down 1-0, the Lions gained momentum, as
Lukas Moenter quickly beat No. 103 Hill on court one 6-3, 6-1 to tie things up.
The Lions took the lead after
Lucas Moreno beat Tullis on court for 6-3, 6-4.
Diego Nava picked up a win over Mateo Vereau on court three 7-5, 6-3.
Up 3-1, the Cougars put their first singles point on the board when
Austin Di Giulio fell to Matthew Pearce on court four 6-3, 6-4.
With a 3-2 lead,
Max Kaiser pushed Gajardo to three sets and came out with the win on court five, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, clinching the match for the Lions.
The Lions will be back home on Saturday for Senior Day, where
Lukas Moenter and
Nick Borchenko will be recognized before the match, which starts at noon.
