Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team fell in both of its games on the first day of the LMU Tournament on Friday, as the team lost to Oregon State 6-2 and Western Carolina 3-2.
The Lions opened up the tournament honoring former Lions Sam Fischer. Fischer was inducted into the 2019 LMU Hall of Fame in February. The Hall of Famer played for LMU from 2009-12 and was the First Team All-PCSC selection and the first All-American in program history. The USA National Team member threw out the first pitch after an unveiling of her number (52), which has been retired at Smith Field.
The Lions (10-9) opened up the tournament against Oregon State. The Beavers (13-5) scored two unearned runs to kick off the first inning, while the Lions had one.
Andrea Gonzalez was first up to bat for the Lions and first on base after she was walked.
Riley Ehlen was advanced to second base on an error giving Gonzalez an unearned run.
After a quiet second inning, the Beavers scored their third unearned run of the game, taking a 3-1 lead over the Lions. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning.
Oregon State picked up their momentum in the fifth inning, as a homerun that was hit with two players on base would give the Beavers a 6-1 lead.
The Lions responded at the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to beat Oregon State.
Delanie Wisz was walked, and then
Kaley Robinson pinch ran for
Desiree Moreno after she was walked. Wisz advanced to third after
Megan Dedrick grounded out. Gonzalez grounded out to give Wisz a run, making it a 6-2 game.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, giving Oregon State a 6-2 win.
The Lions had two total hits, while the Beavers had seven.
Hailey Jackson and
Irma Sanchez both went 1-3. Gonzalez had LMU's one RBI.
Hannah Bandimere pitched 4.1 innings and allowed five hits and six runs, while
Linnay Wilson pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
The Lions had to pick right back up and take on Western Carolina in their second game of the day, where they put up a fight, but couldn't hold on.
Western Carolina scored the first run of the game in the second inning after a homerun.
The Lions responded in the third inning, starting with a single from Robinson, who then advanced to second after
Sierra Marshall grounded out and then advanced to third after Sanchez hit a single. Moreno sent Robinson home after she singled, tying things up with the Catamounts.
Western Carolina put two more runs on the board in the fourth, while the Lions went scoreless. LMU put one more run on the board in the fifth inning, but that wasn't enough to beat the Catamounts.
Maddison Flores pinch ran after
Megan Martin hit a single. A sac bunt sent Flores to second, and then she advanced to third after a passed ball. Sanchez hit a single to send Flores home, giving her an unearned run.
The Lions weren't able to pick up any more runs in the sixth and seventh innings, falling to Western Carolina 3-2.
LMU had 10 total hits compared to the Catamounts five. Sanchez went 3-4,
Taylor Keinath went 2-3, Moreno, Ehlen, and Martin went 1-3, while Robinson went 1-2.
Samantha Manti pitched 3.2 innings allowing two hits and three runs.
Linnay Wilson pitched 3.0 scoreless innings and allowed two hits, while
Bailey Tanner made her debut as a Lion, pitching .1 inning and allowing one hit.
The LMU Tournament will pick back up on Saturday morning. The Lions will play their game at 3:00 p.m. against Western Carolina.
