Roman CBI
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - For the first time since LMU defeated Damian Lillard's Weber State team in 2012, Gersten Pavilion will be the site for a men's basketball postseason game. The Lions (21-11, 8-8 WCC) continue their run in the Roman College Basketball Invitational on Monday at 7 p.m. as the Brown Bears (20-11, 7-7 IVY) come west for the quarterfinals.
LMU is coming off a one-point first round win over Cal Baptist last Wednesday, and Brown topped Alabama Birmingham at home, 83-78. The Lions were the only road team to win in the first round of the CBI, with home teams boasting a 7-1 record last week.
The defense carried the Lions to victory. For the 12th time this season, LMU held a team under 60 points and for the eighth time this season an opponent shot below 35 percent from the field. LMU is undefeated in games when either of those feats are accomplished. The Lions allow opponents to score 62.7 ppg, best in the CBI field and 13th fewest in the country.
Brown enters the game with as one of the Ivy League's premiere defensive teams, and just claimed their program's first-ever postseason win. The Bears forced more turnovers and compiled more steals than anyone in their conference.
Rebounding will be key at Brown's Tamenang Choh is the Ivy league's best rebounder and comes in after a double-double performance against the Blazers, while standing in at 6-5. LMU's
Mattias Markusson has led the Lions in scoring each of the last two games and is averaging 16 points and six rebounds since the end of the regular season.
Monday's game will be the fourth matchup all-time between the two programs, and first since 1997. The Lions hold the 2-1 advantage in the series.
The game will air on TheW.tv and feature live audio from Jesse Kass. The winner will advance to the semifinal round, where the matchups will be rebracketed.
