Lions Shutout LBSU in First Game of Double-Header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LONG BEACH, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team split against Long Beach State University in its double-header Saturday afternoon, as the Lions won their first game in a 3-0 shutout, but fell 8-0 in their second.

"Sam threw a really nice game one," said head coach Sami Strinz-Ward. "I love how she competed. "I was also happy with the adjustments we made at the plate in the first game."

The first game of the double-header was quiet for the first five innings. It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Lions put the first run on the board. Molly Grumbo was first up to bat in the sixth and hit a double and then advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt. A single from Andrea Gonzalez sent Grumbo home, to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

The Lions maintained momentum in the top of the sixth, as they put two more runs on the board.

Hailey Jackson went to first base after being hit by the pitch, and then advanced to third after Grumbo hit a single and then advanced on the throw. With Jackson on third and Grumbo on second, Irma Sanchez hit a double to send them both home, giving the Lions a 3-0 lead to close out the game.

The Lions had seven hits and three runs, compared to the 49ers' zero runs and one hit. Gonzalez and Grumbo went 2-3 at the plate, while Sanchez and Kaley Robinson went 1-3.

Samantha Manti pitched a complete seven inning shutout and only allowed one hit, advancing her record to 9-4 on the season.

The Lions struggled in their second game of the day, as LBSU shut them out 8-0, which started with three runs in the first inning. The 49ers kept their momentum, scoring one run in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Linnay Wilson picked up her first loss of the season, as she pitched 4.1 innings and allowed 11 hits and eight runs.

With an 8-0 lead at the bottom of the fifth, the game came to a close. The Lions are now 13-16 against LBSU all-time.

LMU will be back in action on Tuesday to take on Cal Baptist at home in a double-header. This will be the Lions last opponent before the team starts conference play.
