The Loyola Marymount Lions (5-5) got behind early against the University of Oregon (6-2) and couldn't muster any scoring threats until late in the game and ultimately fell 6-0.
Â
LMU put runners on base in the first and third inning and threatened to score in the third. Redshirt sophomore
Harry Hibberd drew a walk in the inning followed by
Nick Sogard's single up the middle against Oregon's starter Cole Stringer. With two Lions on base, junior
Cooper Uhl hit a shot to the third base side but it fell into the glove of Oregon's Sam Novitske who started the five, four, three double-play ending the inning and scoring threat of LMU.
Â
The Lions
Josh Agnew had a solid outing for head coach
Jason Gill's team. In his 6.0 innings pitched he gave up seven hits to the Ducks and of his five earned runs, three came off sacrifice flies and a fielder's choice. Agnew faced 28 batters for his outing and had one strike out and two walks.
Â
LMU went quietly in the fourth, fifth and six managing only one base runner as
Trevin Esquerra was hit by a pitch in the top of the fourth. Oregon only managed to score a run in the fourth off of Jonny DeLuca's sacrifice fly to right field scoring Tanner Smith. Agnew settled into a groove after giving up the run and quieted Oregon's bats retiring seven-straight.
Â
The game got away from LMU in the seventh after Agnew walked Novitske to start the inning. In relief was redshirt sophomore
Giuseppe Benedetti who got DeLuca out swinging but then gave up a two-run home run over the left field wall to Spencer Steer pushing the Ducks in front by six.Â
Â
The Lions threatened in the top of the eighth when
Ryan Kawano walked, followed by
Dylan Hirsch's pinch run steal of second.
Kenny Oyama walked after Hirsch's stolen base putting two runners on for LMU. The rally was quickly ended when
Harry Hibberd hit into a double-play, their third of the game, and Sogard grounded out to second ending the inning for LMU.
Â
LMU put two base runners on in the ninth after a Uhl walk and a
Brandon Shearer single to left but couldn't find a way to bring him home either and suffered their second shut-out of the season.Â
Â
The Lions and Ducks put an end to their three-game series tomorrow with first pitch in the third game slated for noon.
