Lions Split on Day One of LMU Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team split on the first day of the LMU Tournament, as the team beat UC Santa Barbara 3-2, but fell to No. 2 Oklahoma 14-0.

The Lions (15-10) opened the second weekend of the tournament against UCSB Thursday morning, where the team picked up its first win of the tournament.

The Lions had a dominating second inning, as they scored all three of their runs. Delanie Wisz set the tone, as she was first up to bat and hit a homerun.

Maddison Flores was next to put a run on the board after she singled, and then advanced when Megan Dedrick was hit by the pitch and was then sent home after Molly Grumbo hit a single.

Dedrick then put the third run on the board after Irma Sanchez reached first base on an error, giving her an unearned run.

The Gauchos responded in the third inning with one run, and then scored their second run in the fifth, which was unearned.

Grumbo was dominating at the plate, as she went 3-4 and had one RBI. Flores and Kaley Robinson went 2-3, while Derdrick went 1-2. The Lions had 10 total hits and two errors, while UCSB had nine hits and one error.

Samantha Manti picked up her fifth win of the season, as she pitched four innings, allowing eight hits and two runs. Linnay Wilson pitched three innings, allowing one hit and zero runs.

Up 1-0 on the day, the Lions went into their second game of the day against No. 2 Oklahoma. The Lions battled, but couldn't keep up their momentum from the first game, as the Sooners put up seven runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth. The game was called after the bottom of the fifth.

Mallory Eckroth made her second appearance has a Lion, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs, while Bailey Tanner made her first ever appearance as a Lion, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and four runs. Hannah Bandimere (9-6) picked up the loss.

With no hits from the Lions and no errors from the Sooners, Oklahoma threw a perfect game.

The Lions are looking to bounce back on day two of the tournament, as they take on Cal Poly (4-18) at 8:00 a.m. The Lions are 7-6 against the Mustangs. The teams last met in 2016, where the Lions swept them in both of their two games.
