LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team picked up its second win of the weekend after tallying up its highest amount of runs in a game this season, as the team beat Cal Poly 9-4.
The Lions and the Mustangs had a quiet first inning, as both teams went scoreless. Cal Poly put its first two runs on the board in the second, and then the Lions responded, having an explosive seven-run inning.
Megan Dedrick was the first to score for the Lions after
Riley Ehlen sent her home when she was hit by the pitch. A passed ball would then advance Ehlen to second,
Maddison Flores to third and then give
Andrea Gonzalez a run.
Ehlen then scored after a double from
Molly Grumbo, followed by a run from
Hailey Jackson after
Kaley Robinson scored, giving the Lions a 5-2 lead over the Mustangs, but they still weren't done.
A sacrifice fly from
Delanie Wisz sent Grumbo home. Dedrick was back up to bat for the second time in the inning, which came with a single to allow Robinson to get a run.
Cal Poly scored their last two runs of the game in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to compete with the Lions. The Lions put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as a fly out from Robinson would give Flores a run, followed by a run from Ehlen after Dedrick was hit by a pitch. The Lions ended the inning up 9-4. This is the second win of the season the Lions have over the Mustangs.
Both teams had eight total hits, while the Lions had one error and the Mustangs had zero. Robinson and Dedrick led the team in RBIs with two. Dedrick was 3-3 at the plate, while Robinson was 2-3.
Linnay Wilson picked up her second win of the year, as she pitched 5.2 innings and allowed five hits and two runs.
Samantha Manti pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three hits and two runs.
The Lions will pick back up for day three of the LMU Tournament on Saturday against Illinois. The Lions haven't played Illinois since 2010, where they lost their only game to them.
