Lions Sweep Boston University

LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team swept Boston University at home Tuesday afternoon, as the team won its first game 2-1, and then won its second 3-2.

"I am pleased with our pitchers doing enough to keep us in the ball games and give us the opportunity to get it done offensively," said head coach Sami Strinz Ward. "We are making them a little closer than we would like to right now, but we are grinding out and finding ways to win and that is going to be important for us in the conference stretch of our season. We need to grind and find ways to fight and stay competitive and win."

The Lions first game was off to a slow start, as both teams went scoreless for the first five innings. It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Terriers put a run on the board.

LMU responded at the bottom of the seventh to tie things up after Delanie Wisz reached first on a fielder's choice, and then advanced home after Desiree Moreno hit a double.

Wisz's run forced an eighth inning, where Boston University couldn't make a run. The Lions closed out the inning with a win when Maddison Flores scored a run after Kaley Robinson reached the base on a throwing error.

The Terriers had nine total hits and one error compared to the Lions' five hits and two errors. Moreno had the Lions' one RBI of the game and went 1-3. Molly Grumbo, Andrea Gonzalez and Robinson also went 1-3, while Sanchez went 1-2.

Linnay Wilson picked up her first win of the season, as she pitched three innings, allowing three hits and zero runs. Hannah Bandimere pitched five innings and allowed six hits and one run.

The Lions started their second game of the day with more momentum, as LMU quickly put two runs on the board.

Grumbo scored the first run of the second game after she was walked, which was followed by a single and then an advancement to third by Sanchez, giving Grumbo an unearned run.

A sacrifice fly from Riley Ehlen sent Sanchez home, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead at the bottom of the first.

The Terriers answered back in the third inning with two runs after a homerun with someone already on base. The Lions did not let the tie last long, as they put another run on the board in the bottom of the third.

First up to bat in the third, Grumbo hit a single, and then advanced to third after Sanchez grounded out. Grumbo scored after a double from Gonzalez, giving the Lions the lead.

The teams went scoreless for the remainder of the game, giving the Lions a 3-2 win over Boston University and extending their winning streak to four.

Samantha Manti (4-4) pitched seven innings and allowed four runs and two hits, earning her fourth win of the season.

The Lions had five total hits and zero errors compared to Boston University's four hits and one error. Grumbo and Gonzalez went 1-2, while Sanchez went 2-3 and Megan Dedrick went 1-3.

The Lions will continue their homestand this week, as they will be hosting the second weekend of the LMU Tournament. Participating teams include, UC Santa Barbara, Oklahoma, Cal Poly, Illinois, Cal Baptist and Dartmouth. Play will start Thursday and will continue until Sunday.
