Lions Upend Portland, 70-54

LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount women's basketball team upended Portland (12-16, 4-13) Thursday night, as the Lions came out with a 70-54 win on the road. 
 
The Lions (17-12, 10-7) set the tone right at tip-off, as Bree Alford made the first basket of the game. The Pilots responded with a three-pointer, giving them their only lead of the game. Jasmine Jones made a basket to give the Lions their lead back. The Lions ended the first quarter up 17-14.
 
The Pilots battled second quarter, as they came within one point of the Lions, but were never able to tie things up or take a lead back. The Lions gained momentum later in the second quarter and started to widen their lead. 
 
With just a second left before halftime, Raychel Stanley made a layup to give the Lions their first double-digit lead of the game. LMU left the half up 34-21. 
 
Alford opened up the third quarter with a three-pointer. The Lions dominated the rest of the quarter, as they then went on a 10-0 run and took their first 20-point lead of the game, ending the quarter up 54-33. 
 
LMU took its biggest lead of the game of 23 points fourth quarter. Glory Jones made a three-point shot to close the game for the Lions, ending in a 70-54 victory over Portland.
 
Gabby Green led the Lions in scoring with 17 points while also tallying up seven rebounds. Chelsey Gipson and Alford both had 11 points a piece, while Alford also had 13 rebounds, earning her seventh double-double of the season. Gipson led the team in assists with four. 
 
The Lions shot 41 percent from the field, compared to the Pilots' 37 percent. LMU had 42 total rebounds and nine steals, while Portland had 38 and five. 
 
All Lions proved to be dominant Thursday night, as LMU had 33 points off of the bench. 
 
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday to take on Gonzaga in Spokane Wash. at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs are 26-3 on the season and 15-2 in conference play, Gonzaga just picked up an 83-60 win it its last game against Pepperdine.
