Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lions Cruise Past USD

LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount women's basketball team put on a dominating performance against San Diego, as the team picked up an easy 83-57 win on National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday afternoon in Gersten Pavilion.

"What I thought we did really well, was putting together 40 minutes of really solid basketball," said head coach Charity Elliott. "Defensively, we were able to set the tone, get some easy baskets and get us going in transition, which is always where we want to go and the pace we want to play."

The Toreros (8-14, 1-10) put the first points on the board right after tip-off, the Lions quickly responded when Cierra Belvin made a three-point shot, LMU maintained the lead the rest of the game.

It didn't take long for the Lions (13-10, 6-5) to take a double-digit lead, which was made after Bianca Velacso hit a three. LMU closed the first quarter up 25-12, with eight rebounds and eight assists, compared to USD's five rebounds and three assists.

Jasmine Jones' basket in the second quarter made it 35-15, giving the Lions their first 20-point lead of the game, one of many. The Lions closed out the half up 41-22 on USD.

The Lions maintained momentum going into the second half, as they never let the Toreros come within 10-points third quarter. After making her third three of the game third quarter, Chelsey Gibson tallied 20-points. Both Gipson and Bianca Velasco closed out the quarter with three three-pointers. LMU ended the third up 63-42 on San Diego.

The Lions were able to maintain at least a 20-point lead for all of the fourth quarter. Haley Herdman made the last basket for the Lions, her three-point shot gave the Lions an 83-57 victory over USD.

Gipson led the team in points with 24, while also compiling four assists. Jones also led the team in points with 20, which almost ties her season high of 21 that she produced against BYU on Thursday. Bianca Velasco was also a team leader in points, as she had 11, while Andee Velasco led the team in assists with seven, and Bree Alford led the team in rebounds with 10.

"Jasmine Jones was really good tonight, as well as Chelsey Gipson as far as shooting the ball, Bianca coming off the bench and hitting three-threes was really cool, we needed it," said Elliott.

The Lions had 27-points off of the bench, compared to USD's 22. LMU had a field goal percentage of 54, compared to USD's 37 percent, while the team also out-rebounded the Toreros 33-3.

The Lions win came with an energized crowd, thanks to the 253 Girl Scouts of Los Angeles who were in attendance to help the team celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

"We had such great energy on Thursday night, had a huge win, it is always hard to come back and replicate that, I was really proud of the fact that we came back and we played hard and competed. We have had two games back-to-back games that have had good intensity, good energy and I think our chemistry is starting to look pretty good," said Elliott.

The Lions will head up north next week to take on Santa Clara on Thursday and then San Francisco on Saturday.
