RENO, Nevada – The Lions jumped out quickly and shutdown the Nevada offense in the first half, but the Wolf Pack (1-1) found their stroke in the second half to take the game, 72-67, in LMU's (1-1) first road challenge of the young season.
LMU opened the game on an 8-0 spurt, highlighted by threes from
Erik Johansson and
Ivan Alipiev. After Nevada scored with an and-1,
Parker Dortch hit a three to push the lead back up to eight for the Lions. LMU would hit five threes in the first half and never give up their opening lead over the first 20 minutes, taking a 36-32 advantage into the locker room.
Eli Scott picked up his third and fourth fouls both at the 18:51 mark sending the junior to the sideline for the next eight minutes. Nevada took their first lead of the game at the 17:07 mark, but a 5-0 run by
Jonathan Dos Anjos hitting a top of the key jumper followed by an Alipiev three gave the Lions the lead back.
Despite Nevada building up a double-digit lead to as high as 12 points, but the Lions would not go away and continued to chip away into the final seconds keeping it at a two-possession game.
The Wolf Pack were held to 37.0 percent from the field in the first half, but improved that number to 50 percent (14-for-28) in the second half. The Lions were able to knock down just one three after halftime, an Alipiev triple with just over a minute remaining.
Deovaunta Williams scored the final five points of the game for LMU by getting to the basket while the Lions were playing the fouling game defensively.
Despite his foul trouble limiting his minutes,
Eli Scott led the Lions with 18 points. Alipiev recorded a near double-double, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds.
LMU's bench was a bright spot, outscoring the home bench 21-3, led by eight apiece by
Jonathan Dos Anjos and Williams.
The Lions have one final game on the schedule before departing for the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas. Colorado State visits Gersten Pavlion on Nov. 16 for a 7 p.m. game.
