Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lions Magical Season Comes to an End

The Loyola Marymount University Lions men's soccer team's (11-6-3, 6-1-0 WCC) magical run in 2019 came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 20 Seattle University 3-1.

The Lions returned to the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2013 and opened the tournament at Sullivan Field for the first time since 2009. The appearance in the NCAAs was head coach Paul Krumpe's seventh as the leader of the Lions.

Jacob Jackson, getting his 16th start of the season, saw the ball comes his way early in the contest as the Redhawks put two shots on goal in the first fifteen minutes but had their opportunities turned away by the Lions keeper.

The Lions first shot of the game came off the foot of Narciso Cervantes in the 18th minute and was quickly followed by shots from Gaetan Roux in the 21st and Brandon Sanchez in the 25th but none of LMU's chances found the mark and the game remained tied at zero.

Seattle broke the scoreless tie in the 41st minute as they were able to get a shot past Jackson and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Lions found the equalizer in the 53rd minute as Duhaney Williams' shot found its mark knotting the game at 1-1. Williams goal, his fifth of the season, gave him the team lead for the year. He was able to get the ball in the back of the net off assists from Gerardo Lopez and Cervantes.

With the game tied at one apiece the Lions conceded a goal a few minutes later when the Redhawks put the ball in the back of the net on a free kick that got past the outstretched hand of Jackson, giving the lead right back to Seattle at 2-1.

Over the course of the next twenty minutes LMU put six shots on the board put couldn't get the tying goal as every one of the chances were turned away. The Lions continued to put pressure on the Redhawks with keeping the ball in their attacking half but couldn't break through.

In the 79th minute the Redhawks were able to extend their lead by two goals which proved to be too much for LMU to overcome. The Lions run ended as the horn sounded after 90 minutes with Seattle taking the victory over LMU 3-1.

The Lions come off their most successful season since 2013 when they made the NCAA Tournament and look to capitalize on this year's success for multiple seasons in the future.
