LOS ANGELES – LMU defended their home pool on Sunday morning in the team's only competition of the week. The Lions (6-7) topped the United State Naval Academy (11-7) in a non-conference game after
David Carrasco scored three of the game's first four goals.
Carrasco opened the game with a goal two minutes into the action. After Navy tied it at 1-1, Carrasco scored back-to-back goals, followed by consecutive goals from
Jonny Rimlinger to give the Lions the 5-1 advantage after the opening period.
The Midshipmen opened the second quarter with a goal before reigning WWPA Player of the Week
Alexandros Athymaritis scored his first of the day to make it 6-2. After Navy cut their deficit back down to three, Carrasco and
Luke Chandler scored one after another to increase the lead back up to 8-3. Carrasco would add two more in the first half to give him six through the opening 13 minutes of play. A goal by Athymaritis late in the period extended the lead seven goals before Navy got one back before the break to make it 11-5 at the half.
LMU scored the first two goals of the second half to build the lead up to a game-high eight, 13-5.
Daniel Roth scored on a penalty with Athymaritis following at even-strength. After Navy scored their first of the period,
Joseph Cavazos scored his first of the game on his only shot attempt and Roth added his second of the quarter. LMU took a 15-8 lead into the final eight minutes after Navy closed out the period with two goals.
Each team scored once in the final session as Rimlinger was able to close out the game with a goal and complete his hat trick.
The Lions now open a stretch of three consetutive conference games, with the first two at home. On Saturday, Oct. 12, LMU hosts UC San Diego for a 1 p.m. game in their only action of next week.
