Blazo Mitrovic scored a career-best eight goals and nine points, as the #11 LMU men's water polo team (8-8, 3-1 WWPA) held off Air Force (9-12, 0-2 WWPA), 16-14, on the road.
After trailing early by a pair of goals, Mitrovic,
Alexandros Athymaritis, and
Daniel Roth rattled off three-straight goals to take their first lead of the game with 2:51 remaining in the first. Mitrovic would score once more in the period, but the opening eight minutes ended all even at 4-4.
Similar to the first quarter, the second quarter opened with a pair of Air Force goals to take a two-score advantage.
Joseph Shaw and
David Carrasco answered with equalizers to bring the game to 6-6 with 4:40 remaining until halftime. The Falcons would add one more with less than two minutes to play but Mitrovic tied the game on a powerplay on the ensuing possession to make it a tie game at intermission.
Air Force's Reagan Pittman scored two goals to open the third quarter and build the home team's lead back up to two. LMU would respond with four of the next five goals of the quarter to take a 11-10 advantage, with Mitrovic scoring three and Roth adding his second of the game.
The Falcons jumped ahead in the fourth quarter following three unanswered goals to take a 13-11 lead with 5:57 remaining on the game clock. With the Lions trailing 13-11 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter,
Jonny Rimlinger then Mitrovic each scored on consecutive possessions to secure victory for the Lions. Air Force cut their deficit to one with a goal at the 15 second mark, but as LMU was keeping the ball away,
David Carrasco tossed it in the open cage as time expired to secure the 16-14 victory.
The Lions will take a break from conference games to compete in Santa Clara's Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament. The tournament will open with LMU taking on Brown on Oct. 25, before facing off against Bucknell and Princeton on Oct. 26.
