LOS ANGELES – Neither team held more than a one goal lead through the first three quarters as two of the WWPA's unbeatens went head-to-head on Saturday at Burns Aquatics Center. After LMU (6-8, 1-1 WWPA) topped UC San Diego (16-5, 4-0 WWPA) earlier in the season, the Tritons won this round, 14-12.
Each team traded off goals throughout the day, with UCSD holding a 4-3 lead after one period and LMU evening the score 1-1 at the half. Each team added two goals in the third quarter to set up a final eight minute stretch to determine the outcome.
UCSD scored the first two goals of the final period, before
Blazo Mitrovic added his fourth goal of the game with 5:37 remaining to cut the deficit to just one. The Tritons built their lead back up to two goals before
Austin Clark converted his only goal of the day to make it 12-11 with 3:11 on the clock. UC San Diego went on to score the next two to extend their lead to 14-11 with 1:21 to play.
Jonny Rimlinger scored in the closing seconds but the final half minute, but the game was decided at that point.
Joseph Shaw scored two goals and was awarded the Testman Scholarship following the game.
David Carrasco and
Daniel Roth each added a pair of goals.
Jon Lien made eight saves in his 32 minutes as LMU's goalkeeper.
Conference play continues this Thursday from Burns as LMU hosts Santa Clara for a 3 p.m. day game to close out this seven-game home stretch.
