LMU will complete their second set of conference games this week as they face San Diego on Jan. 3 and BYU on Jan. 5. Currently, the Lions are 1-1 in conference, 8-6 overall, and will look to better their record as they take on two strong teams.
The Lions will first head down to San Diego on Thursday for a 6 pm game. The Toreros have a similar record to the Lions, as they are 1-1 in conference and 8-5 overall. This past weekend, San Diego fell to San Francisco in a close match and beat Santa Clara with a second half comeback. The team's star player is junior Patricia Brossman, who leads the Toreros in points and rebounds by a big margin. Another key player is Sydney Shepard, a dangerous competitor from behind the line with 26 three pointers on the year. The Toreros are a hardworking, blue collar team who will be a fairly even matchup for the Lions.
Following San Diego, the Lions will travel to Provo to face the Cougars on Saturday at 1 pm. The BYU team had a strong non-conference start, going 8-3, and defeated both Santa Clara and San Francisco to begin league play at 2-0. They have only lost one game at home this year and will be looking to defend their home court. They will also look to defend their four game win streak. They face Pepperdine on Jan. 3, before taking on the Lions. The Cougars are led by Freshman Shaylee Gonzales, with 221 points on the year, averaging 17 a game. BYU is always a challenging matchup for the Lions and will be no different this year.
After their phenomenal performance against Portland this past Monday, the Lions are hoping to build a win streak as they head into this weeks matches. LMU will rely on high scoring players such as Chelsey Gipson, Jasmine Jones and Gabby Green, as well as the leadership of Andee Velasco and defensive strength of Bree Alford as they face two strong WCC opponents.
Following these matches, the Lions return home to play San Francisco and Santa Clara before they begin their second semester. LMU will face the Dons on Jan. 10 and the Broncos on Jan. 12.
