LOS ANGELES – Friday and Sunday mark the first time that fans will see the 2018 Loyola Marymount women's soccer team at home, after the Lions opened the season on the road. LMU plays the first game of a pair of soccer double headers, hosting Loyola-Chicago Friday at 4 p.m. and Northeastern Sunday at 1 p.m.
"It's nice to be home," said Head Coach
Michelle Myers. "It was a nice trip, but it was a long trip. I think it was good for the girls in terms of bonding. We have a lot of alums over on the islands who really, really treated us well. It was nice to see all of them, but coming back home and sleeping in our own beds and returning to our own routine is important. Everybody is moving onto campus this weekend, so we're excited to have a great home crowd and really put a stamp on this opening weekend."
The Lions (0-1-1) first battle another Loyola (1-1), the Ramblers of Chicago. The Missouri Valley Conference team split their opening weekend, topping UMass Lowell and falling to a ranked Notre Dame side. The two teams have met only once in program history, a 3-0 home win for LMU. The Lions accounted for 30 shots in that 2002 contest, the third-most for any LMU game.
On Sunday, Northeastern (1-1) comes to Sullivan Field for just the second time as well. The Lions shut out the Huskies, 1-0, in 2013 in the only head-to-head meeting. Northeastern opened the season with a win over Connecticut and a narrow defeat to Boston College. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.
"I think with this group of players, and Jon joining our staff, we are playing a little more possession style and trying to move the ball around a little more," said Myers. "We're trying to figure out who is going to play where and put the puzzle together. I thought we had a good weekend. Both games in the second half, we did really well, and now it's about putting away our chances and giving ourselves a chance to really win the game versus hang on."
Both games will have live stats and a live video stream available at the link above.
All fans in attendance to either game will receive free entrance to the men's soccer game to follow that same day. Friday's match will honor all first responders and members of our Armed Forces, with discounted tickets available. Sunday's game is all about "Back to School" with a pencil pouch giveaway for the first 75 kids, a dorm room package giveaway to two LMU students, and post-match autographs following the game.
