Higher Seeds Advance In Day One

The WWPA Championships First Day Went According To Seeds Including Host LMU's Win Over Chapman.

Los Angeles, CA (April 23) - Top-seed and tournament host Loyola Marymount University was one of the four higher seeds to advance in the first day of the 2004 Western Water Polo Association Championships at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.

In all six games on the day the higher seed earned a win as LMU advanced thanks to an 18-2 win over Chapman. The Lions will face four-seed Cal State Bakersfield, who defeated five-seed Santa Clara 12-8, in the second semifinal at 1:45 p.m. Saturday. In the other semifinal three-seed UC Davis, a 13-6 winner over No. 6 CS San Bernardino, will face No. 2 seed UC San Diego, a 13-3 winner over CS Hayward. They will play in the first semfinal at 12:30 p.m.

The Lions starters jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period as LMU coasted in game one. LMU continues its quest of four straight conference titles as they improve to 22-5 on the season.

Freshman Dora Szabolcsi scored five goals on the day and fellow freshman Cara Colton added a hat-trick as nine different Lions earned a goal on the day. Szabolcsi is the sixth time a Lion has scored five goals this season and just the 14th all-time in program history.

The 18 goals for the Lions is two shy of the record of 20 set in 2000.
