Los Angeles, CA (April 25) - Santa Clara's Catherine Flynn scored five goals including the game winner with 2:02 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Broncos to a 6-5 extra-frame victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the fifth place game of the Western Water Polo Championships at Loyola Marymount University.
In a back-and-forth game that saw three lead changes, the Coyotes tied the game at 5-5 on a goal from Sarah Reneker with just 52 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Both teams had a 6-on-5 opportunity in the first overtime but could not capitalize.
Santa Clara goalie Anne Ginotti kept the Broncos in it during overtime, making a big save on a penalty shot in the first overtime and finished the two extra frames with five saves. She had 11 saves for the game, including seven in the final three periods.
Alanna Simpkins scored the Broncos other goal, coming with 2:36 left in regulation to give Santa Clara the 5-4 lead. The Coyotes also had just two players score, with Reneker scoring three and Erin Gallagher adding two.
The Broncos finish in fifth place with a 21-16 record while CSUSB takes sixth with a 23-16 mark.
