ATHENS (Aug. 16) - Incoming Loyola Marymount University freshman Christine Robinson made the most of an opportunity of a lifetime as she made an impact in Canada's opening round water polo game against Russia in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens on Sunday. The Preliminaries in women's water polo began on Sunday for Group B, which includes Canada, Russia, United States and Hungary. The Canadians, with LMU student-athletes Robinson and sophomore Rachel Riddell on their roster, took on Russia in Game 3. After tying the game 6-6, Russia scored the final two goals to earn the 8-6 win. As for Robinson, she was key in the Canadians come back to tie the game. Trailing 6-4, Robinson scored her first Olympic goal with 1:23 remaining in the third quarter to cut the deficit to one. Robinson scored on an extra-player attack. They would tie the game with 5:35 remaining in the game. Robinson signed a letter of intent to attend LMU starting this fall and will join the four-time Western Water Polo Association champions for the upcoming 2005 season. She will join teammate Riddell, a 2003 All-American goalie for the Lions. Riddell, a back-up goalie for the Canadians in the Olympics, did not play for the Lions in 2004 in order to train for the Olympics this summer. Team Canada will have their work cut-out as they take on the United States in their next game on Aug. 18 at 10:45 a.m. Team USA defeated Hungary 7-6 in their first match of the Olympics.
