GLENDORA, Calif. - Loyola Marymount women's water polo broke away at the end to defeat Azusa Pacific and finish 6-1 in the Golden Coast Conference. The 7-4 win over Azusa Pacific (14-14, 2-4 GCC) gave the Lions (16-14, 6-1 GCC) their best conference finish in the five years of playing in the GCC.
LMU jumped ahead early for the second-straight game in as many days. Hana Vilanova scored both goals in the first quarter, an even-strength at 4:38 and a 5-meter at 1:59, to give the Lions the 2-0 edge after one.
Morgan Molloy opened the second quarter with an early goal pushing the lead to 3-0 off the assist from Abbey Grosse. After APU scored a 6-on-5 goal to get on the board, Vilanova closed out the half with another in the last minute before intermission.
The Cougars scored three quick goals coming out of the break, tying the score at four-all with 5:02 remaining in the third quarter. Abbey Grosse gave the lead back to the Lions in the final half minute of the third quarter from Vilanova's assist.
LMU capitalized in the final quarter, scoring both goals to hold off the home team. Vilanova first found Katie Hungerford while on the advantage for the goal at the 7:21 mark and then scored her fourth of the day with 2:27 on the clock.
Vilanova scored or assisted on six of LMU's seven goals, finishing with four goals and two assists.
Claire Wright played all 32 minutes in goal, making nine saves on the day. Hungerford led all players with her season-high seven steals.
The win guarantees LMU a top-two seed in the conference tournament, played on Loyola Marymount's campus from April 27-29.
