FULLERTON, Calif. â€" In a Wednesday night game at Cal State Fullerton, the Loyola Marymount softball team (16-17-1) earned a 3-1 victory over the Titans in the first of three games between the two teams this week. This win snapped a six-game losing streak to the Titans, as the last LMU win over Cal State Fullerton came on April 9, 2008 (7-3).
The Titans scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the first and the next two innings were scoreless until the Lions scored their first run in the top of the fourth as Andrea Gonzalez singled up the middle to drive Sabrina Tebou home from third and tie it up 1-1.
Once again, the game saw two scoreless innings before LMU notched two runs in the top of the seventh which would secure the 3-1 win. Brooke Christensen doubled to center field to earn two RBI on the play, as Tebou and Delanie Wisz made it home on the game-winning play. Cal State Fullerton was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh and the Lions ran away with the victory.
Hannah Bandimere pitched the complete game for the Lions, earning her 11th win of the season after throwing four strikeouts and giving up zero earned runs on the night.
"Hannah did a great job in the circle for us," Lions head coach Sami Strinz-Ward said. "I'm proud of her growth and leadership on the field. Her abilities, along with our talented defense, give us a chance to win every game. Our offense is also stepping up and finding ways on base. Brooke had a look of determination in her eye when she stepped up to earn the game-winning hit and RBI. I was absolutely thrilled with the passion our team showed."
The Lions and Titans will round out their series in a Friday doubleheader with games at 3 and 5 p.m.
