LOS ANGELES – The LMU men's soccer team (6-12, 3-3 WCC) ended the 2018 season on a high note, defeating the San Francisco Dons (6-10-1, 4-3 WCC) 5-2 on Senior Night at Sullivan Field. Tonight's game was the final career match for the team's five seniors:
Miles Chow,
Matthew Gooden,
Antonio Porreco,
Cole Souza and
James Tanaka.
Chow was unable to play due to injury, but the other four seniors took the field for the Lions in the win. Porreco scored a goal and had two shots for LMU (both on goal) in 61 minutes. Gooden dished out an assist in the win and played a full 90 minutes to finish off his career as a Lion. Souza also played the game's entire 90 minutes leading LMU's successful defense on the night.
"This senior group has been tremendous in terms of leadership," head coach
Paul Krumpe said. "They've all been spectacular in their own ways. Collectively, it's the best group of leaders I've had in a while, maybe ever."
The Lions scored first in the match, but not until the 35th minute. Junior
Brandon Sanchez punched in the goal for LMU off of a deflection from freshman teammate
CJ Neville's orginial shot. This marked the lone goal of the opening half as the Lions entered halftime with the 1-0 lead.
The second half was an eventful one, with six combined goals scored between the two teams. LMU struck once again to go up 2-0 in the 55th minute as freshman
Dylan Shockey sent a long cross inside from the right sideline to Neville who turned and sent a shot in the back of the net past Dons' goalkeeper Ruben Stuiver.
USF got on the board just four minutes later, capitalizing on a break in LMU's defense to get one past LMU keeper
Paul Lewis to cut LMU's lead to 2-1 at 60:27.
Another four minutes passed before the game's next goal at 64:21 as Shockey once again sent a perfect cross inside which sophomore
Kris Fourcand headed in to put LMU back up two, 3-1.
LMU struck again at 71:46 on a breakaway as Gooden fed it to Shockey who sent it to freshman
Jack Sauls who secured the punch-in to extend the Lions' lead to 4-1.
The Dons' second goal of the night came in the 74th minute after the Lions were called for a foul in the box, resulting in a made penalty kick by Sandro Bradara, making it 4-2.
The Lions weren't finished, though. In the final play of his LMU career, Porreco scored the final goal of the match off an assist from Sanchez to push his team ahead 5-2. This was the game's final score.
Shockey entered the LMU record book with his three assists tonight, tying him for first for most assists in a single game.
LMU racked up a season-high 22 shots in the victory as they outshot USF 22-13. The Lions also held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Lewis finished the 2018 season with a 6-9 record in goal for LMU. In the final game of his junior year, he played a full 90 minutes and had six saves, with three in each half.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys played and also of how they responded when we gave up a soft goal," Krumpe said. "We went up 2-0, were in control, and then kind of gave them a soft goal, but then we responded. I'm very pleased with the effort throughout."
