Strong Fourth Quarter Powers BYU Past LMU

LOS ANGELES -- The LMU women's basketball team hosted (11-7, 3-4 WCC) the BYU Cougars (10-7, 6-1 WCC) on Thursday, Jan. 18 in a WCC matchup that was neck-and-neck through three quarters, with the score tied at 39-39 heading into the final frame. The Cougars ultimately pulled ahead and came away with a 67-55 victory over the Lions after outscoring LMU 28-16 in the fourth.

BYU has now won five straight games, while LMU has lost its last four.

LMU continued to struggle from the free-throw line in the loss, shooting just 44.4 percent (12-of-27). The Cougars poured in 20-of-30 (.667) free-throw attempts in the contest.

BYU guard Cassie Devashrayee scored a game-high 29 points, going 7-of-13 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line in the win. Brenna Chase also added 22 points for the Cougars, while Sara Hamson racked up game highs in rebounds (15) and blocks (6).

Cheyanne Wallace led the Lions in scoring with 15 points to go along with four rebounds. Bree Alford pulled down 13 boards with eight points while Gabby Green added seven points, five assists and three steals. Raychel Stanley added seven points and four rebounds. LMU snagged 14 steals in the game, as Makenzie Cast and Andee Velasco tallied four apiece for the Lions.

Thursday's game served as Education Day at Gersten Pavilion, with approximately 3,500 local middle school students cheering on the Lions in the stands. LMU heads to Portland to take on the Pilots this Saturday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. The team's next home game will be against rival Pepperdine on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
