LOS ANGELES â€" Utilizing a pair of second-half goals, UC Irvine (5-2-1) defeated LMU (1-6-2) by a count of 2-0 from Sullivan Field on Thursday night.

In the 53rd minute, UC Irvine broke the scoreless match, as Giovanni Godoy netted his fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick. Godoy created the opportunity, firing a shot from 30 yards that hit the crossbar and fell to the foot of an Anteater teammate, where he was fouled in the box by Cole Souza. After Souza was issued the yellow card, Godoy stepped to the spot and punched the shot past Collin Partee.

Thirty minutes later, Jose Ortiz made it 2-0 UCI when he scored his second goal of the year. This chance also came on the heels of a LMU caution as Camilo Rey was issued a red card following a hard tackle near midfield. Ortiz, who drew the tackle, was sent to the sideline due to injury, but was summoned as play resumed. Daniel Crisostomo found a streaking Ortiz as he raced toward the goal from the right wing and buried his shot in the back of the net.

LMU outshot UC Irvine, 17-13, and managed five corner kicks to Irvine's three, but could not get on the board in the loss. Alex Waldron registered five saves in net for UC Irvine, while Partee finished with four for the Lions.

The Lions return to action on Sunday, Sept. 24, hosting UC Riverside as part of a double-header with women's soccer from Sullivan Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
