LOS ANGELES - The Loyola Marymount women's soccer team's first shutout of the season gave the Lions a win against a ranked opponent Friday night. The Lions (2-1-1) scored in the 31st minute and played hard-nosed defense to defeat No. 17 Utah (3-1-0) and had the Utes their first loss of the season.
"We talked about it at halftime, how hard they worked to put a goal in and how we couldn't afford to let one in after that," said Head Coach Michelle Myers. "We're always talking about keep improving everyday. The first shutout of the season, Charlee came up huge again, and we have all those things to build on."
Emily Carman was the game's lone goal scorer, finishing her first of the season. The sophomore forward received a Sarah Sanger pass and elevated to head it into the back of the net for the early game-winner.
The Lions continued to work defensively through the second half, defending all 12 of Utah's shot attempts in the final 45 minutes. Charlee Pruitt made all six of the game's saves with five coming in the second half.
"These tough opponents are why we built the schedule that we did," said Myers. "That's the hard part to get a big win tonight and not come out flat on Sunday. We'll get to use our depth on Sunday and give a lot of good players the opportunity to help us."
LMU returns to Sullivan Field Sunday for another doubleheader with the men's team. The women take on Columbia at 1 p.m., who lost Friday night at Pepperdine for their first defeat of the year. The LMU men will follow with a matchup against Penn State.
