PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Loyola Marymount women's soccer team outshot No. 21 Rutgers, but could not find the back of the net in the 2017 season opener Friday, losing, 3-0. The Lions (0-0-1) and Scarlet Knights (1-0-0) adjusted the game's start time to earlier in the day to avoid lighting concerns.
After playing a scoreless first 22 minutes, Rutgers' Alaysia Lane scored for the home team in her first collegiate game off a deflected cross in the box. Rutgers second goal came off a long run by Carina Hendley that started back at midfield.
A foul called in the 47th minute gave the home team a free kick from the side of the box. The Scarlet Knights benefited from the set piece and scored their third and final goal of the day after Amirah Ali finished the Nicole Whitley ball into the box.
The Lions finished with nine shots, compared to the six from Rutgers, but only put four on frame. Pilar Torres and Sarina Bolden combined for seven total shots and three shots on goal.
Charlee Pruitt made three saves in her 90 minutes in net.
LMU will fly out of New Jersey and head to West Lafayette, Ind., to continue this road trip. The Lions will play at Purdue on Monday with a scheduled start of 7 p.m. EST / 4 p.m. PST. That match will be available through live stream and with audio as well.
