LMU beach volleyball's top pair of Sarah Sponcil and Savannah Slattery split two matches on the opening day of the 2017 USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships on Thursday from Hermosa Beach, Calif.

The Lions dropped their first match of the day to Wilson/Kraft of Pepperdine in three sets, 21-19, 26-28, 15-11, before rebounding for a 21-18, 23-21 win over Florida Atlantic's Rice/Kinlaw - the second seed in the tournament.
