LOS ANGELES - The Loyola Marymount women's water polo team won its third straight game Saturday, all Golden Coast Conference matches. The #21 Lions (12-13, 4-2 GCC) beat Azusa Pacific (13-11, 3-2 GCC), 13-8, behind Caitlin Schafer's four-goal performance.
LMU never trailed as Schafer and Katie Hungerford teamed up to put the Lions ahead, 2-0, early in the first. After APU got on the board, Schafer answered to give LMU a 3-1 lead after the first period of play.
Hana Vilanova opened the scoring in the second period before the Cougars scored two straight to make it a 4-3 game. Kiana Etrata and Kiana Harpstrite responded with a goal apiece before Azusa Pacific scored two before the half making it a 6-5 game at intermission.
Etrata opened the second half with a goal on LMU's first possession. The Lions scored all six goals in the third quarter with Schafer scoring a pair, and a goals coming from Morgan Molloy, Hungerford, and Sage Pfeiffer.
With the game already in hand, APU outscored the Lions in the final quarter, 3-1, with the lone LMU goal coming from Dana Acquah-Asare.
Loyola Marymount hits the road for the final time in the regular season on Apr. 21 to take on UC Irvine, before returning home the following day for Senior Day on Apr. 22 against Concordia.
