SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Loyola Marymount competed in four races on Saturday, three on the women's side and one on the men's, at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships.

Today was a solid day," said Head Coach Justin Price. "The varsity 8 and 2nd varsity 8 both beat their seed which was good to see, but what matters is how they finish in the Sunday final. We had a strong performance by the two freshmen in the varsity 2- to win by open water in the 2nd fastest time of the day. The novice 4 raced hard but came up short against a tough Western Washington crew. They posted the 2nd fastest time of the day in the event so it will be fun to see how things play out in the final."

In a race for lane positioning, the Lions took second in the Women's Varsity 8+ DI/Open. LMU's 6:42.636 barely edged San Diego State's 6:42.770 to clinch the second bow for Sunday's final at 9 a.m.

LMU followed the varsity result with a third-place finish (6:52.602) in the Women's JV 8+ DI/Open. The final is set for 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Lions won the Men's 2 with the freshman pair of Samuel Johnston and Tyler Chase crossing the line in 7:08.379, a full 15 seconds faster than the second pair in their heat. The two advance to the Grand Final on Sunday at 11:20 a.m.

The LMU Women's Novice 4+ also earned their spot in Sunday's 12:10 p.m. Grand Final after placing second in their heat Saturday with a time of 7:42.709.
