LOS ANGELES - The Loyola Marymount women's soccer team kicked off the spring season this past Sunday at San Diego State with a 2-0 win. Both teams played with reduced sized rosters due to injuries and the absence of graduating seniors.
The rain stayed away, but the wind and cloudy conditions made for a cold afternoon of soccer. LMU opened the scoring with a goal in the 13th minute from a left-sided cross off the foot of Pilar Torres that found Phoebe Riley crashing the net only to have her shot rebound off the SDSU goalkeeper. Sarina Bolden, however, was there to tap in the rebound and put the Lions ahead, 1-0. LMU carried that lead into the half.
In the second half, the Lions had the wind at their backs and put the Aztecs under pressure, resulting in several good looks on goal including a missed penalty kick and one shot that hit off the side post.
Eventually, the Lions got on the board again on a Maddie Medved corner kick which found the head of Emily Carman, who knocked it down towards the goal and Sarina Bolden tapped it to Phoebe Riley who made sure it hit the back of the net. Goalkeepers Charlee Pruitt and Lee Erickson combined for the shutout.
"It was nice to get back on the field and play a full sized game," said Head Coach Michelle Myers. "With all the rain and injuries we have had this spring, we have been limited in our training. The weather and field conditions made it tough to really play possession soccer, but we were proud of the team for finding a way to score two goals against a strong, athletic, and organized SDSU team."
The Lions will play three home games this spring before wrapping with a double-header against UC Santa Barbara and Westmont in Santa Barbara. LMU hosts Cal State Northridge on Mar. 19, Cal State Fullerton on Mar. 26, and Cal State LA on Apr. 9. All three games will begin at 11 a.m. on Sullivan Field.
