FULLERTON, Calif. - The LMU softball team battled back from a six-run deficit to come within one after the fourth, but saw its comeback attempt fall short against Utah State, 9-5, on the second day of the Easton Invitational.
Utah State (2-0) went ahead by six after the third before LMU (1-2) responded with a five-run inning in the top of the fourth to come within one. However, the Aggies added a trio of runs the following inning and held the Lions at bay to come away with its first win in the series history.
Inside the Box Score
The Aggies got on the board in the bottom of the first on a fielder's choice before adding three more the following frame. Utah State added two more in the third to pull ahead, 6-0.
Irma Sanchez and Amanda Dirks started the top of the fourth off with back-to-back singles before Alex Finie reached on an error, allowing Sanchez to cross home after an errand throw. Lindsey Matoi kept the momentum going with a sacrifice fly to bring around Dirks, cutting the deficit to 6-2.
With two down, Mackenzie Kutzke got aboard after being hit by a pitch and a passed ball advanced Finie and Kutze into scoring position. Brooke Christensen worked a walk to load the bases and Aria Pogni followed by delivering a bases-clearing double to put the Lions within one, 6-5.
Utah State responded with another trio of runs in the top of the fifth and held the Lions without a hit the final three innings.
