LOS ANGELES â€" After Loyola Marymount worked to even the score and force overtime, it was Portland's game-winner that ended the night early. The Lions (6-5-3, 1-3-0 WCC) were unable to complete the comeback Saturday night, losing to Portland (4-10-1, 1-4-0) in two overtimes.

"Obviously this was very disappointing for us," said Head Coach Michelle Myers. "I told the girls, we created enough opportunities, but if you don't put them in the back of the net that's what happens. We had our chances tonight, and didn't put them away. Credit to us to get one back, but we have to be able to win games and not just hang onto games."

Following a scoreless first half that forced Portland goalkeeper Rachel Lusby to make eight of her 11 saves, the Pilots got on the board first after intermission. Ariel Viera shot hard off the crossbar, resulting in the ball coming straight down then bouncing in the net to give the visitors the first lead in the 60th minute.

The goal shifted LMU into high gear, with the Lions hunting for the equalizer. The answer came in the 76th minute with a scrum in the box following a cross and Phoebe Riley getting her foot on the ball and poking it into the net. Riley led all players with five shots.

The 1-1 score line stood through both regulation and the first overtime period, forcing a final ten minutes of play. Off another long throw, the Pilots received the ball in the box, passed off to the open player and Taryn Ries scored the game-winner, ending the game in the 105th minute.

Charlee Pruitt made six saves in net, including five in the second half alone to keep LMU in the game.

"Now we have two hard road games," said Myers. "We expect a dog fight again, but we have to put away our chances and not leave the door open."

The Lions now prepare for their final road trip of the WCC schedule. LMU plays at San Diego on Thursday, Oct. 19, before heading to BYU on Saturday, Oct. 21 to close out the week.
