LMU on Twitter After being upset by host Denver on Friday night, the #20 LMU volleyball team (3-2) rebounded to post a 25-20, 25-16, 25-19 sweep of Utah State (1-4) in the first of two schedule matches for the Lions on Saturday at the Pioneer Classic in Denver, Colo.
Junior Sarah Sponcil once again led the way for LMU, collecting a match-best 15 kills on 29 swings for a .414 hitting percentage. The freshman setting duo of Jessie Prichard and Tess Reid finished with 19 and 18 assists, respectively, as the Lions hit .367 as a team.
In addition to the 15 from Sponcil, LMU also received 13 kills on 24 attacks with only two errors from freshman Savannah Slattery. Slattery, who hit .458 in the match, also added three of LMU's six aces, with Sponcil registering a pair of her own.
The Lions hit .333 or better in each of the three sets while holding Utah State to just .168 hitting over the course of the match. LMU's best set came in the second, as it hit .433 behind six Sponcil kills while holding the Aggies to just .167 hitting.
Lauren Anderson had a solid showing for Utah State in the loss, registering 11 kills while hitting .241. Erica Moscoso set the attack for the Aggies, dishing out 23 assists.
The Lions will conclude play at the Pioneer Classic with a 3:30 p.m. match against Montana State.
