LOS ANGELES -- Two first half goals were all the LMU men's soccer team needed as it down UC Davis, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
Sahid Conteh and Lucky Puengrod each tabbed a goal apiece, with Conteh's coming just three minutes into play while Puengrod struck at the 30-minute mark.
Colin Partee registered his second shutout of the season, halting four shots in between the pipes, while the Lions defense contested 20 shot attempts.
Just under three minutes into action, UC Davis launched a goal kick to midfield, where Jose Ochoa touched the ball down and sent the ball back to Mark Dotseth at LMU's 35 yard line. Dotseth booted the ball into UC Davis territory and the speedy Conteh raced against the Aggies back line for possession. Conteh won and controlled the ball just inside the box and fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Lions the early lead.
The Aggies had several scoring opportunities in the first half, including three straight corner kicks 20 minutes in, but LMU cleared any threat.
The Lions struck again in transition as UC Davis cleared a corner kick to midfield, but lost possession as Jose Ochoa took over just inside the circle in Lion territory. Ochoa sent a ball down the right flank to Puengrod, who corralled the pass and drove towards the center before meeting a trio of defenders and launched a shot just inside the right post to give LMU the upper hand at 2-0.
The second half featured the Aggies taking 13 shots to LMU's five, but the Lions controlled the tempo of the game as they secured their third victory at home.
LMU will face a midweek test at UC Irvine on Wednesday before returning home on Sunday, Sept. 18 against CSU Bakersfield.
