NORMANDY, France - While the women's basketball team continued its #RoaringThroughEurope tour in Normandy, Shelbi Aimonetti penned an inside look of the trip in this feature blog.
LMU Women's Basketball Invasion of Normandy
The drive from Amsterdam to France was an eight-hour voyage. Most of our day was spent on the bus watching movie after movie (including "Saving Private Ryan") and making numerous pit stops. Five altogether! Supposedly, it's mandatory for most bus drivers in Europe to take a break every hour and a half. It was time for the driver to rest and for us to raid the convenient stores! It was a long trek… but worth it for what was awaiting us in Deauville.
We finally arrived to Deauville: a small town located in the heart of Normandy, north of France. We stayed at the marvelous Barrier Hotel du Golf Deauville. It had an extraordinary rustic charm. Upon entering, even after a long day on the bus, the girls were blown away. The lobby impressed us all with impressive horse-lamps and the central sculpture apples. Everything was perfect, the deluxe views, bathroom, breakfast, setting, décor and the staff. It was a fantastic way to start our trip to France.
That evening we went a few miles to a quaint street along a river. We picked a delightful, local French restaurant. We were all very excited to try the French cuisine. To start our three-course meal we all ordered the juicy, shelled shrimp, and got the chance to taste the snails. We decided to pass on the duck liver. Most agreed our adventurous choices were actually quite appetizing! For the second course we had a choice between steak and frites, or the salmon. Both were excellent. To finish our meal, the dessert choices were chocolate mouse, rice pudding, apple pie, or a special vanilla meringue. I was lucky to try them all of course. You couldn't go wrong with any! Our first meal in France was one not to forget: full of laughter, smiles, and utter joy. That night I went to bed incredibly pleased and grateful for such a remarkable experience. Each and every day is exquisite.
