LOS ANGELES - Damian Martin, who played at LMU for three seasons and graduated in 2007, was one of 12 players named to the Australian National Men's Basketball Team that will compete in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games beginning in August.
Martin, who set the all-time single game record with nine steals against Boise State on Dec. 19, 2006, finished his career with 403 points, 347 rebounds, 277 assists and 158 steals. The assist total ranks 12th all-time at LMU while he is ranked seventh all-time in steals.
The Australian team will have a WCC flavor. Despite injury Andrew Bogut has been given until the last minute to prove his fitness and play at his third Olympic Games alongside five other players with Olympic experience.
David Andersen will become one of only eight Australian men to compete at four Olympic Games in Rio, Patty Mills and Joe Ingles are off to their third Games while newly crowned NBA champion Matthew Dellavedova and Aron Baynes return after helping the side to 7th at the London 2012 Games.
Chris Goulding, Ryan Broekhoff, Cameron Bairstow, Brock Motum, Kevin Lisch and Martin will make their Olympic debut.
Other national team news includes women's volleyball head coach Tom Black serving as an assistant with the Team USA Women's Volleyball National Team, who just earned silver at FIVB Grand Prix. And Tara Welling (Tara Erdmann) competed in the final of 5,000-meter at the U.S. National Trails.
